Producer Creed Taylor thought Strauss’s famous opening could become a hit if Deodato made it swing, although even he was startled by what followed. The album also draws on Borodin and Debussy, but it was the nine-minute Strauss arrangement, cut down for radio, that reached No. 2 in the United States and won a Grammy, turning a few bars associated with 2001: A Space Odyssey into one of the unlikeliest pop singles of the 1970s.
