Loose Cuts
Sketches of Spain
Miles Davis and Gil Evans
A friend played Miles Davis a recording of Rodrigo’s concerto in 1959, and he was so taken with the Adagio that he brought it to Gil Evans. What began with that piece grew into an entire album, with Evans surrounding Davis’s solitary trumpet with an orchestra coloured by flutes, bassoons, French horns and Spanish percussion. Their shorter treatment of de Falla’s “Will O’ the Wisp” belongs to the same imagined Spain, reached through sound and atmosphere rather than literal transcription.
