In 1967, Rhoda Scott crossed the Atlantic to study with Nadia Boulanger, whose pupils included Aaron Copland, Quincy Jones and Philip Glass. Scott later recalled being intimidated by a teacher who seemed “like from another planet”. Boulanger’s insistence that every note carry the weight of a symphony stayed with her, even though Scott decided the classical world was not where she belonged.

That tension gives Classiques & Jazz its point. Scott does not approach the repertoire on conservatoire terms; with only Hammond B3 and Victor Jones’s drums, she brings it into her own world of pedals, bass lines and groove.
