Dvořák

Dvořák’s American years brought him into close contact with the Black baritone and composer Harry T. Burleigh, whose singing introduced him to African American spirituals that left traces in the New World Symphony. That exchange gives jazz responses to Dvořák an extra resonance, from Art Tatum’s dazzling Humoresque to Marian Petrescu’s reinvention of the symphony.
