Wagner used leitmotifs to bind his vast music dramas together, linking short musical ideas to characters, objects, emotions and events. He moulded and combined them as the drama changed, allowing the orchestra to reveal what a character was thinking or why an event was taking place. Their compactness also makes them inviting material for jazz musicians, who can improvise on a motif while retaining its dramatic associations.
